Steve Crawford
Scottish born Steve Crawford, senior guitar tutor at the Bermuda School of Music, took up the guitar at age 15, studying under James Polland, who became his musical mentor as well as his technical tutor. In 1998 Steve’s debut concert performance was as soloist in Vivaldi’s guitar Concerto in D major which formed part of the Bermuda Festival of the Performing arts. In 1999 Steve passed the Advanced Certificate of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music with Grade A in performance, becoming a Licentiate of that body in 2001.
He has now taught guitar at the Bermuda School of Music (formerly the Bermuda Academy of Music) for 25 years and is pleased to note that a number of his pupils have gone on to become professional guitarists. In May 2003 he founded the annual Bermuda Guitar Festival, which has regularly attracted top composers and performers and has acted as a showcase for global talent for seventeen years. Steve is equally at home in popular as well as classical music, performing with the pop/rock band Working Title for four years and founding the group Tooz Company with violinist and fellow faculty member Dr. La Tannia Ellerbe in 2017.
Steve is currently artist in residence at the Conservatory at Tucker’s Point and during summer months can be found playing in various restaurants in Andalucia, Spain and in Asilah, Morocco. His musical influences include John Williams, Andrew York, Adam del Monte and Adam Rafferty, the majority of whom have performed at the Bermuda Guitar Festival
Johanna Pino González
Johanna joined the BSM strings faculty in the Fall of 2020 teaching individual and group violin lessons as well as actively collaborating with several BSM teacher and student ensembles. A passionate and devoted musician and pedagogue with more than 15 years of teaching experience in Colombia and the United States, Johanna possesses a genuine ability for working with children; particularly the younger ones. Through her teaching Johanna nurtures their love for music using the Suzuki and traditional methods. Several of her former students in Colombia have won youth orchestra solo competitions playing violin or viola solo concertos while other students have continued their music education professionally.
Johanna strongly believes that any child can learn music when having an inclusive teacher as a mentor. Johanna has successfully taught children visually impaired and under the Autistic Spectrum. Currently, Johanna is working along with a team of Colombian fellow music instructors on a project to increase awareness on inclusion while also compiling resources for visually impaired children playing violin or viola.
A native from Bogotá, Colombia, Johanna initiated her music education at an early age at the Universidad Javeriana Preparatory Music Program, later relocating to the United States to continue her professional studies in music. Johanna holds a Master of Viola Performance with Violin Suzuki Pedagogy Emphasis from The Hartt School of Music at the University of Hartford and a Bachelor of Music Performance with emphasis in Viola from the Texas Christian University. She spent two years in NYC taking private viola lessons and collaborating with chamber music ensembles at the Queens College of Music. Her primary viola teachers included Rita Porfiris, Misha Galaganov, Junah Chung, and Emanuel Olivieri.
Johanna's Suzuki Violin teaching training was completed under the renowned Suzuki pedagogues Ms. Terry Einfeldt and Ms. Cathy Lee, two of Dr. Suzuki's disciples who have contributed to the implementation of the Suzuki Method in the United States. Johanna's additional music pedagogy training includes courses on Early Childhood Stimulation and the Dalcroze method.
As a guest violin and viola instructor, Johanna has been invited to the XV, XIX, XX y XXI versions of the International Suzuki Festival in Colombia, the 2019 Suzuki workshop at San Juan, Puerto Rico, and the 5th "Verarte" Music Festival at Arequipa, Perú and the Interviolas Bogotá Festival.
Johanna has also taught violin and viola lessons to low income and vulnerable children under community music projects In the United States and Colombia, including: The “City Music” sponsored by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra (Program based on the principles of the Venezuelan music program “El Sistema”) and the Cartagena Music Festival Educational Programs (a musical social project sponsored by the Colombian government.)
As an instrumentalist, Johanna had performed solo and chamber music recitals in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Texas, Connecticut, New York, and Bermuda. As an orchestra musician, Johanna has played with the San Angelo Symphony Orchestra in Texas, the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, the Orquesta Nueva Filarmonía of Colombia .
Johana recently joined the Bermuda Philharmonic Orchestra and since 2021 along with BSM faculty fellow Steve Crawford, founded Duo Latino (Viola and guitar) devoted to playing a diverse repertoire of Latin and Caribbean music as well traditional classic repertoire for both instruments.
